U.S.S. Indianapolis: Men of Courage

Remember in the movie “Jaws”, when Robert Shaw as Quint told the story of the U.S.S. Indianapolis? To how he was one of the sailors that survived that incident? Well, this was how that all happened.

Nicholas Cage, Thomas Jane, Tom Sizemore, and Matt Lanter, were in this. And for what happened in this, was all true thanks to “Jaws” and that BBC documentary movie of that.

Imperial Japanese Navy submarines have struck the U.S.S. Underhill as the U.S.S. Indianapolis was next. Under the command of General Mochitsura Hashimoto, they did it. By slamming four torpedoes into the side hull. It was when the ship was comin’ back, from the island of Tinian, and delivered the Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the shark infested waters. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. All of them were covered in black oil. They didn’t see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger shark. 13ft long. Then came great whites, bull sharks, makos, hammerheads, thresher sharks, and more. Maybe thousands. In tight groups they were in, they were out at sea for five days. As bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent.

By the time a U.S.A.F. seaplane found them, they were glad to be saved. Eleven hundred men went in the shark infested waters, three hundred and sixteen men came out, as the sharks took the rest.

After the war in the Pacific ended, and by warning military court martial, U.S. Navy Captain Charles McVay of the U.S.S. Indianapolis who survived this, committed suicide in his own home. By of course, putting a gun in his mouth and blowing his brains out.

However, for General Mochitsura Hashimoto, he retired a few years after the war ended. Instead, he became a Shinto priest at a shrine in Kyoto. Years later, he met U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1999. By restoring Capt. Charles McVay’s reputation for this U.S. Navy disaster. And it did, five days after he died on October 25th, 2000. At age 91.

So I’m giving this 8/10 stars. Just a few errors, but really good. I also sometimes think about singing that song, that they did in “Jaws”. That ‘Show me the way to go home’ tune….
